Essential utensils for matcha (powdered green tea)

All you need is a tea whisk and a tea bowl

Most utensils used in the way of tea are specially designed for making matcha. It is difficult to have all the tea utensils for casual matcha. Everyone’s Tea recommends you to have at least a tea whisk and a tea bowl. Tea whisks are one of the most important utensils, which are difficult to substitute with some other goods. It is a small bamboo whisk and has many delicate splines. Tea whisks mix matcha powder and hot water really well. The other important item is a tea bowl. In the way of tea, people enjoy not only matcha tea, but also everything related to serving matcha. Enjoying the tea utensils is a part of it, and tea bowls have a big part in it. Just finding your favorite tea bowl for tea time will be an enjoyable experience. Honestly, you might be able to use some kitchen wares to substitute the other utensils for matcha, like tea spoons and tea caddies. However, it’s better to have the right utensils to enjoy Japanese atmosphere, and for the utilities. Just accompanying your tea whisk and bowl with small items can create a complete style and look much smarter. Here, we introduce some of the essential utensils for matcha.

Tea whisk

This is a special utensil to mix matcha powder in hot water. It is made of bamboo. There are a lot of different types of tea whisk, varying in shape, material, and number of splines. Tea whisks are created with different characters by different traditions. Basically, tea whisks that have a large number of splines are easy to agitate teas and used for thin teas. A low number of splines are tougher and used for thick teas. If you want to take up casual matcha, Everyone’s Tea will recommend a tea whisk that has 72(kazuho), 80, or 100 splines and natural white color type. They are easy to hold and agitate, and tougher than dark color types. Dark bamboos are smoked and a little more fragile than natural color bamboo. Bamboo tea whisks will eventually wear out, so try a couple models and find your favorite one.

Tea bowl

The tea bowl is not only a bowl to drink matcha. It is also a cooking utensil, and an art object. When you look for a tea bowl, you should consider all three elements. As a cooking utensil, a tea bowl should be large enough to allow the tea whisk to move around. The bowl should also be easy to hold when drinking. You can find bowls in different colors, textures and designs to reflect any occasion and mood.


Natsume are containers for matcha. They are placed beside tea bowls when tea is served. Natsume are enjoyed as art objects at the tea ceremonies. They will help to create a small Japanese tea world on your table. There are various shapes, colors, and patterns. If you want fancy tea settings, try gold-relief lacquered natsume. Solid color lacquered natsume will be perfect for smart tea settings. Solid natsume will also accentuate your tea bowls. If you do not know which shape of natsume you should buy, find chu-natsume. Chu-natsume are the most basic model in size and shape, and a good one to buy as your first natsume.

Tea scoop

These are used to scoop the powdered green tea (matcha), and most tea scoops are made of bamboo. Some tea scoops that are made by famous craftsmen are very expensive. For just enjoying casual matcha, reasonable bamboo tea scoops will do fine to bring Japanese atmosphere to your table.

Container for sweets

At the tea ceremonies, sweets are served with matcha, and the sweet container (plates, trays, or bowls) can be lacquer ware or ceramic ware. The guests take a portion of the sweets from the sweet container to their individual Kaishi (Japanese paper) by chopsticks. Kaishi is Japanese paper used as an individual plate to place some sweets on at tea ceremonies. Kaishi are not always a necessary item at casual tea. However, they are not expensive, and can be useful items to create different tea atmospheres from the usual.
