Feel the relaxing aura of Japanese tea
Taking up a new hobby is exciting. How about trying Japanese tea? It has a distinctive world. Imagine having Japanese tea in a Japanese tatami room, contemplating a beautiful Japanese garden with a refreshing green tea aroma around you. The tea is usually enjoyed with no sugar; the little bitterness will rejuvenate your spirit. Japanese tea engages the senses. You will experience quiet and relaxing moments. Doesn’t it sound fantastic?
You might not have a tatami room or Japanese garden, but, you can still try Japanese tea at home and enjoy this kind of peaceful moment. Japanese enjoy green teas casually every day with family, friends, or by themselves. It is not a difficult thing to try.

Try Sencha first
There are many types of green teas in Japan. However, many foreign tea shops have just one or two kinds of Japanese tea in their selection, maybe only labeled “green tea”. We are not sure if they have as nice a flavor as we enjoy in Japan. We would recommend buying from a Japanese tea-specialized store. Look for sencha. It is the most common green tea. Sencha is a perfect tea to start with. It’s the most basic of Japanese teas. If the store has a wide selection of sencha, the middle grade sencha is fine. We would like you to try leaf teas, not tea bags. It is because teas brewed with leaves taste better than those brewed with tea bags. If you like it, try some other type of sencha. The tastes differ by origin, maker and grade.
If you want to try some other type of Japanese tea, how about hojicha or genmaicha? They are also popular and reasonably priced. They have nice roasting flavors, and can be good as the tea for meals. Please refer to our “Types of green tea” page for more information.
We hope you will enjoy Japanese tea in your daily life by giving a little more color to your usual tea time, and this information will help you to take up Japanese tea.
